Gary Myrick and The Figures - S/T - 1980

This is one great time capsule of a record. I mean that because it is a time capsule that captures a musical sound very well. This record just sounds like high energy new wave power pop of 1980. This record embodies that sound in my opinion. I also say great because the record stands up really well and is still very listenable.

Before getting this record recently all I knew from Gary Myrick was "She Talks in Stereo" so all these other songs were knew to me. So I was pleasantly surprised when the needle dropped and two real rockers open the album. "Living Disaster" is a really good up beat number. "Ever Since The World Began" is a frenetic energy filled song that has some cool little guitar riffs in it. The opening is simply great. Please do listen to that.

"She Talks in Stereo" should be familiar to everyone. It is a slower number and has a really cool guitar underwater thing going on. Make is pretty trippy sounding.

"She's So Teenage" is a good little song in my book.

I'd like to also apologize for the little skip in my rip of "Meaningless". Maybe someday I will fix that. I do plan on it, because the song is really good. Someday when I have time I'll do that, but until then you'll have to enjoy the song with the skip. I like this song, it kind of reminds me of the song "Girls Like Me" from the opening of "Valley Girl". If you know that song, I think you'll know what I'm talking about.

The rest of the album is pretty good and makes for a pretty impressive debut. Gary continued to record and from what I can gather from the internet still performs to this day.

Enjoy!
