Steve Dahl & Teenage Radiation - Do You Think I'm Disco - 1979

This is a record I was so excited to find on Record Store Day.  I grew up in the Chicago area and when I was a kid just getting into pop and rock music Steve Dahl was at his height.  I actually started listening a couple years after this record, but I do remember some of the media coverage of his "Disco Sucks" campaign.  One song I remember by Steve Dahl was "Crew Cut Hero", which was a parody of Foreigner's "Jukebox Hero."  General James Lee Dozier was kidnapped by terrorists in 1981 and this song was in reference to that.  Dahl also had another song about serial killer John Wayne Gacy called "Another Kid in the Crawl."  Pretty dark stuff, but as a dumb kids we thought it was funny.  Check out the YouTube clips below.

Naughty comedy that today doesn't seem all that naughty. I think the thought that this was considered "Adults Only" entertainment is funnier than the actual material on the record.

Tenderloinz - Where's The Beef - 1984

Here's a little electro funk novelty from the 80's. Many who lived in the 80's will remember the wildly successful "Where's the beef" campaign from Wendy's. For those of you who missed it the basic idea was that they were selling the idea that their hamburgers had more beef and so this old lady would get a burger from some other place, look at the small patty and demand "where's the beef?" It was a cultural phenomenon that basically just got annoying. Anyways just like other crazy pop culture phenomenon's someone saw an opportunity to cash in with a novelty song and this here is the result. Borrowing from the up and coming genre of electro hip hop this tried to capitalize on a couple fads. The record is fun to listen to now for nostalgia more than anything.

Allan Sherman - The Drinking Man's Diet b/w The Laarge Daark Aardvark Song 7" - 1965

I and I'm sure many others were first exposed to Allan Sherman through his two Camp Granada songs, "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" and the sequels. I heard the original song on the Dr. Demento show where it was a bit of a staple.

Since collecting records I've picked up a few of Allan Sherman's records. They are quite easy to find in thrift stores. He sold a lot of records and since they are comedy records of their time they end up being sent to the thrift stores instead of being handed down to new generations, much the way Barbra Streisand records litter the record bins of thrift store.


This the only single I have from Allan and both songs are of course very funny. "Drinking Man's Diet" doesn't even really feel too dated. I mean really, when has drinking and alcoholism gone out of style. Timeless.

Lenny & Squiggy - Lenny & The Squigtones - 1980

Let's be honest, this posting is purely a record geek post. Sure the music and comedy is okay here, but the main reason for posting this record is because Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) from Spinal Tap plays guitar, clarinet and adds some background vocals. How awesomely geeky is that. Check out the photo from the inner record sleeve.

I first read about this record around a year ago and I quickly jumped onto the internet and onto some file sharing networks looking for the record, but I couldn't find it. So when I stumbled across the record I bought it without hesitation.

The songs are funny and the banter in between has a few chuckles. I don't know that you'll put this one on repeat, but it's worth at least one listen. You may however want to download the image of Nigel to use as your desktop image.
