Hold Music Volume 1

Last year when we entered into quarantine and started working from home I began playing music on an open mic before video call meetings for work.  I thought of the music as music for everyone while we were on hold waiting for a meeting to start.  The early birds to the calls seemed to enjoy the music.  By May I decided I could put some music together in a mix to share with them.  This is the first mix I made and I named it "Hold Music Volume 1" because I knew this was going to be a series.  This first mix doesn't hold with some of my usual rules of not repeating artists on a mix.  That was because I was putting this together around May The Fourth and Cinco De Mayo and so putting on multiple Star Wars tracks or Yolanda Del Rio was less of a concern.  Also at the time I thought I'd never be sharing this beyond sharing with coworkers.  Also when I first made this I release is as one MP3 track and I didn't give any listing for the songs on the mix.  The other tracks on the mix were songs I had played before meetings around this time.  

Over the coming weeks I will be sharing all the "On Hold" mixes I've made.

SAP Music Christmas Mix 2020

 

So here we are again with another mix of Christmas tunes.  This year, because of the pandemic, I was able to gather songs from all the albums I digitized last year as well as spend a bunch of time on the internet looking for lots of new gems.  So when I sat down to actually put a mix together I had so much material. On the first pass I had about two hours or tracks that I then had to edit down to just under 80 minutes.  Seems sort of silly that I am still sticking to the 80 minute limit which is dictated by a CDs capacity, but I figure it is good to have limits.  Forces me to be selective and to save some tracks for the future.  To be honest with all the work I have put in the last couple years in finding new Christmas music (new to me), I have enough selections for the next five years easily.  

So this year, there are tracks from old records and tracks from new artists.  There is even a track from an old 78 I digitized this summer when I spent a month digitizing all the 78s in my collection.  There is a track I by an artist named Geena Fontenella that I pulled off of YouTube a couple years ago.  I am glad I grabbed it when I did, because it wasn't on her YouTube channel anymore.  When prepping the song I discovered that she tried out for American Idol this past season, so maybe she pulled down this Justin Bieber "Mistletoe" cover because it was old and not fitting with her current image.  Who knows, I like the track and I'm glad to share it.

Another interesting feature of this year's mix is that it leads off with a track from "Anna And The Apocalypse."  This is only interesting if you play this year's mix right after last year's mix because the 2019 mix closes with a song from that new holiday classic film.  So load them both up and get an "Anna And The Apocalypse" double whammy.  And if you haven't watched "Anna And The Apocalypse" yet, drop what you are doing and do so now.  It is wonderful.

SAP Music Halloween Mix 2020

Happy Halloween everyone!  I started gathering songs and clips nice and early this year.  One of the benefits of the Covid-19 pandemic has been working from home.  Without having to commute to work, I got a lot of hours of my life back.  So when I finally sat down to put the mix together in July, I had more than enough tracks and clips to work with.  So I had a really fun time layering all sort of things on top of each other trying to pack as much as I could into the mix.  I feel like I have created some pretty creepy soundscapes of music, spoken word and SFX.

I am also pretty happy with the artwork this year.  This was created from a photo a took a few years ago.  As I started playing with the colors the words electric Frankenstein kept going through my head.  Not the band, but just the words as a theme or feeling.  In the end I feel like I got what I had in my head.

SAP Music Christmas Mix 2019

Merry Christmas everyone!  Enjoy this year's mix and please share with friends and families. 

A great find for me and something to highlight is track three "Deck the Halls" by Mirror Image.  I got this off a Christmas Disco record I picked up at a thrift store this past year.  The song isn't really too disco-y, but it does have a synthesizer that reminds me of the Main Street Electrical Parade.  Give it a listen and let me know if you agree. 

Another favorite is the last track from the film "Anna and the Apocalypse."  I think I mostly want to point that one out because I want recommend that film to as many people as possible.  It is my new Holiday favorite.  I've already watched it twice this season and will probably watch it again before the year is out.

SAP Music Halloween Mix 2019

Happy Halloween everyone!  It is that most wonderful time of the year, time for this year's Halloween mix.  This year I leaned into pulling songs from movies.  I'll be honest there are more than a few YouTube song rips this year and a lot of trailers and movie clips as well.  I think my favorite discovery find is Shari Belafonte singing "Get Dead" a song from a TV movie called "The Midnight Hour". It is really catchy and the sequence in the movie is basically a Thriller rip-off musical number in the middle of this cheese ball TV movie.  Definitely worth seeking out on YouTube. SAP Music Christmas Mix 2018

Merry Christmas everyone.  It is time again for this year's mix.  This year was a bit of a scramble in terms of pulling this year's mix together.  I started very late in the Fall and I made the decision to only use music that I had digitized from records.  And to give myself even more work, the majority of the songs were from records I purchased just in the last month during a shopping spree at Amoeba.  So I pretty much didn't rely on all the digital music I had been throwing into a folder all year round or anything from the many Christmas CD's I picked up at yard sales and thrift stores this year.  The good news is that it gives me a jump on next year.

Because of the last minute scramble and because I gave myself the vinyl only rule, there isn't a lot in the way of layering in movie clips or commercials or some of the other fun stuff I usually try and sprinkle through these mixes.  This year, it is a little more straight ahead.  I hope everyone enjoys it.  Tracks are listed on the artwork.

SAP Music Halloween Mix 2018

SAP Music Summer Mix 2018

It is getting late in the Summer and work hours have been very long.  I haven't had much time for making mixes, but just this past weekend I was able to spend a few hours throwing this together.  I'll admit right up front that there are not a lot of bells and whistles here.  It is pretty much just a regular old mix tape and the theme of Summer, isn't really there.  I just pulled together a huge list of tracks I have liked in recent months and then culled that down into some tracks that I thought flowed together.  Maybe they do and may they don't.  You decide.

SAP Music Christmas 2017

Merry Christmas everyone!  This year's mix is a lot less elaborate than in the past.  This year I have had a lot less free time to work on the mix.  I sort of feel bad about it, but at least I got something put together.  Even without all the bells and whistles I am posting this much later than usual.

SAP Music Halloween Mix 2017

Here it is, the 2017 Halloween Mix.  There is a lot of film music this year.  I've also dropped in a handful of trailers for sequels, including the trailer for season 2 of Stranger Things.  The Comic-Con trailer with Thriller could have just worked on it's own, but I thought I'd do a little editing and layer in some other music.  I also grabbed a piece of Vincent Price dialogue from the Thriller session outtakes.  I think the enhancements worked out pretty good and it all gets me super excited for season 2.

SAP Music Christmas Mix 2016

It is Christmas time and that means Christmas music.  Start annoying your coworkers with this years selection of yuletide ditties.  Or keep the holiday cheer to yourself within the privacy of your own headphones.  In preparing for this year's mix I've been in the Christmas music zone since September, when I started digitizing some of this year's record purchases.  This year I didn't keep a strict vinyl only rule.  It was back to the old eclectic mix of grabbing music from all sorts of sources, CDs, digital files, records, youtube, etc.  Tracks as always are listed on the artwork so you can take a quick peak at what lies in store.  Enjoy!

This Spring has been very busy and I wasn't even sure if things would ever let up enough for me to throw together a mix for the summer.  Well things did die down this weekend and so I combed through a bunch of the music I've been listening to recently.  You'll notice a heavy emphasis on soundtracks.  Maybe this will turn some people onto some new artists.  Enjoy!

SAP Music Christmas Mix 2015

For this year's Christmas mix I committed to only using music I personally digitized from my vinyl record collection.  So there isn't anything really too recent on the mix.  The movie clips are absent as well.  But there is a lot of pops and crackles and charm to committing to vinyl.  The challenge of course was to still try and find some variety.  So many Christmas records are the same old public domain songs.  It is harder to find original tunes.  I have a big Christmas record collection, but because I have used so many tunes in the past from my collection, the number of unused original Christmas songs is getting smaller and smaller.  So there are some of the traditional Christmas songs on here, but I tried to find versions that perhaps are a little less known, but still fun.
